Biography

Carmen Vincelj is a German dancer and choreographer whose partnership with Bryan Watson defined professional Latin dance in the early 2000s. Beginning her competitive career unusually late by elite ballroom standards, Vincelj danced with several partners in Germany before forming an international partnership with Danish dancer Allan Tornsberg in 1996. With Tornsberg, she won the 1997 WDC World Professional South American Showdance championship, establishing herself as a force in competitive dance.

In 1999, Vincelj partnered with South African dancer Bryan Watson, and together they entered an extraordinary championship run. From 1999 through 2007, Watson and Vincelj won nine consecutive WDC World Professional Latin championships. During this same period, they claimed seven British Open Professional Latin victories at Blackpool, cementing their status as one of the defining partnerships in professional Latin competition. Their work spanned all five Latin dances—cha-cha-cha, samba, rumba, paso doble, and jive—combining technical precision with vivid theatrical presence.

Watson and Vincelj announced their competitive retirement in 2007, with farewell performances the following year. Rather than disappearing from the dance world, Vincelj expanded her presence as a coach, adjudicator, choreographer, and lecturer. She worked on the German edition of *So You Think You Can Dance* as a choreographer in 2010 and has delivered congresses and lectures that continue to shape how dancers approach professional Latin training and performance.

Beyond her own partnership, Vincelj has helped stage and present high-level ballroom events including the Dance Legends showcase and the London Ball. Her influence extends across competition results into the teaching, judging, and curated performance culture that surrounds professional Latin dance.
