About this studio
Bachata ConeXion began in September 2017 as a house party celebrating one team member's birthday—a playlist of mostly Bachata at a time when Bachata weekend events barely existed in Melbourne. A second house party in November 2017 formalized the vision: to build a Bachata community and introduce the style to dancers across the city.
The organisation started at the Conga Room in Fitzroy from December 2017, running fortnightly on alternate weekends. As the community grew, Bachata ConeXion moved to Sokol in North Melbourne in April 2018, establishing a larger, permanent home. In December 2018, they expanded further by launching a dance school and social night every Wednesday in Carlton.
Bachata ConeXion's mission is straightforward: they want every person to dance, learn Bachata, and enjoy their events. The philosophy centres on dance mindfulness—connecting with partners while listening to Bachata rhythms and connecting with one another. A core value runs through everything they do: everyone at Bachata ConeXion aims to dance with at least three people they have never danced with before, regardless of experience or skill level. Students, social dancers, visitors, team members, instructors, DJs and photographers are each valued equally.
The organisation has become a hub for the wider Melbourne Bachata scene. In 2018, they created the Bachata Melbourne All Stars Festival (Weekender), which celebrated and highlighted Bachata across the city. They continue to invite guest Bachata instructors and DJs from across the Melbourne scene, strengthening connections within the community.
Today, Bachata ConeXion runs two regular programmes: Saturdays at Sokol in North Melbourne and Wednesdays in Carlton. Both combine teaching with social dancing, making them destinations for both newcomers and established dancers.
