About this studio
Bachata Viva HK teaches weekly Bachata classes and hosts regular social parties across Hong Kong. Founded by Winson Cheung in 2019, the studio began when almost nobody in Hong Kong knew what Bachata was. Classes run Wednesday and Friday evenings at Dancestar Academy in Causeway Bay, with two tracks: Level 1 and Level 2 partnerwork, plus a Foundation class that teaches connection, groove, and body movement in plain language. No partner is required—the studio rotates dancers in class so you leave ready for Hong Kong's social dance floors.
The teaching philosophy is foundation-first: connection and groove come before flashy combinations. You'll work through eight rotating foundation topics at a beginner-friendly level with intermediate depth. Level 2 partnerwork builds social-floor routines and patterns, while the Foundation class explains the basics without jargon. Classes are walk-in welcome, and a first trial costs $100.
Beyond the studio, Bachata Viva HK runs a full calendar of social parties and workshops. Regular Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday nights happen across Central, Causeway Bay, and outdoor venues. The community hosts 500+ organized social dance parties and has grown to consistently welcome 100+ dancers per event, with peak nights reaching 150+. Past events include Bachataland Vol. 2 (a white-and-blue social at ATMOS in Tsim Sha Tsui), Bachata Romantica Party in Lan Kwai Fong, and outdoor Bachata socials with harbour views. The studio also brings in international guest artists and runs festival trips across Asia—to Jeju, Vietnam, Guangzhou, and beyond.
The community that formed through 2020–2022 COVID lockdowns and underground parties has matured into what Winson calls the strongest chapter yet. Workshops happen regularly, including recent sessions on Lady Styling, Partnerwork Tornado, and Musicality with visiting instructors. The studio maintains that technique matters, but warmth matters more: the core mission is connection, confidence, and a community that looks after each other.

Studio history
Winson Cheung started teaching Bachata systematically in 2019 when almost nobody in Hong Kong knew what it was. The scene began with just a handful of dancers. When lockdowns shut down dance across Hong Kong in 2020–2022, Bachata Viva HK hosted underground parties to keep the floor alive. From 2022–2024, the community grew rapidly, with core dancers taking private lessons and exploring social dance through festival travel. Today the studio consistently hosts parties with 100+ dancers and has delivered 1000+ classes and organized 500+ social dance parties.
