About this studio
Dance4Water Glasgow teaches Cuban salsa and bachata in a volunteer-run model where 100% of profits go to WaterAid. The organisation was founded in 2009 by a University of Glasgow student, starting with Salsa4Water Glasgow teaching Cuban Salsa to university students. It has since grown into an international network operating in 10 European cities, with over 200 volunteers engaged in the movement.
Cuban salsa at Dance4Water is a partner dance that can be danced in a couple or in a 'rueda de casino', a large circle with multiple couples. Bachata is a partner dance originating in the Dominican Republic, combining simple basics with intricate footwork and smooth turns. Classes operate on a drop-in basis with no need to pre-book. Partner rotation is built into lessons, so you don't need to bring your own dance partner — many students come solo.
The studio operates from Glasgow University Union on University Avenue. Classes are run by volunteer teachers who receive no payment for their work. There is no dress code, though you should wear clothes and shoes that don't restrict movement. The organisation welcomes volunteers of all ages, identities and backgrounds and operates a strict non-discrimination policy.
As of January 2024, Dance4Water had donated over £470,000 to WaterAid over 14 years. Since 2016, all donations have funded identified WaterAid Focused Country Projects. Recent allocations have supported clean water, sanitation and hygiene projects in Ethiopia, Rwanda, Madagascar and Pakistan.
Participation is genuinely affordable: day passes cost £3 for students or £6 for others, valid for a full day across all styles. A green pass covering any 10 days costs £20 for students or £40 for others. Payment is made at the entrance to each class. If you're interested in volunteering, you can earn free classes by asking a teacher or cashier.
