About this studio

Tango Academy of Boston is built on the pedagogy and expertise of Fernanda Ghi, a world-renowned Argentine tango artist and 1999 IDO World Argentine Tango Champion. The academy operates from two locations: Star Dance in Brighton and Epic Dance Studio in Cambridge. Classes are taught by professional tango instructors and structured into series, with each month exploring a specific topic and material progressing in consecutive classes.

Group classes span four levels. Tango 1 is designed for absolute beginners new to both tango and dance, teaching partner technique and basic vocabulary for social dancing with no partner required. Tango 2+3 is an intermediate course building vocabulary and emphasizing technique for students with some prior experience. Tango 4 is an advanced class by invitation only, for experienced students studying consistently and intensively, and requires a partner. The academy's curriculum is carefully planned to build strong, versatile and musical dancers who understand tango culture.

Private lessons offer one-on-one coaching with professional instructors. Fernanda Ghi offers 45-minute private lessons for individuals and 50-minute lessons for couples, with packages booked within an 8-week timeframe. Pricing starts at $150 per hour for single lessons, dropping to $120 per hour for packages of 2 or more (2 lessons total $260, 3 lessons $360, 4 lessons $480, 5 lessons $600). Online private lessons with Fernanda are $100 per hour, and Be Stretch sessions are $85 per hour. Mia Dalgish, co-manager and professional Argentine tango dancer, offers 50-minute private lessons with packages booked within 4 weeks. Her rates start at $110 per hour for single lessons, dropping to $95 per hour for 4-lesson packages (4 lessons total $380). All private lesson packages include a $20 per hour studio rental fee paid separately. Both instructors offer coaching for leaders, followers and couples.

The academy hosts regular social events. La Social runs every third Wednesday at Peka Restaurant (304 Washington St., Brighton), 7:30–10:00 PM, welcoming dancers of all levels for an evening combining practice, social dance, food and wine. Tango 2x4 meets every fourth Saturday, offering a hybrid social and practice event with two lines of dance (one for practice, one for social), playing songs in stylistic pairs rather than traditional tandas, for $15 per person. The academy also organises larger events: in March, it runs the Open Role Festival Boston, a three-day exploration of dancing the non-traditional role with workshops, practicas and live music. Fernanda Ghi leads immersive intensives, including a Ticket to Tango trip to Buenos Aires.

Fernanda Ghi founded the Fernanda Ghi Dance Company, which creates fusion work combining Argentine tango with theatre, visual arts, opera and other dance styles. She has performed internationally for over two decades, including shows and exhibitions, performances with symphony orchestras (New Mexico, Long Beach, Costa Mesa), a PBS special 'Tango Magic' with Pablo Ziegler and the Orpheus Orchestra, and performances at Tokyo's Imperial Theater. In 2017 and 2018 she served as a judge at Tango Mundial, the World Competition for Argentine Tango. She was commissioned to create a tango ballet for the Tulsa Ballet Dance Company. The academy is woman-owned and operated.
