About this studio

Genovia Dance specializes in teaching salsa to new dancers, with what they describe as the largest group classes in the Sacramento area. Classes run Wednesday and Friday evenings at Divergent Dance Conservatory Studio, 201-C Harding Blvd, Roseville. Wednesday offers beginner salsa at 7:00 pm and intermediate salsa at 8:00 pm. Friday has beginner salsa at 7:00 pm and beginner/intermediate bachata at 8:00 pm. All group classes cost $5 per session.

Elliott Genovia founded the studio after taking his first salsa lesson in 2000. He has trained with performers including Raul Ante, Scott Patterson, Isabelle Rodrigues and Salomon Rivera, and continues to expand into kizomba, salsa on 2, and American and International ballroom. He teaches at public and private venues around the Sacramento area and is on staff at The Ballroom of Sacramento. Dance assistants Lory Yeakle and Jenny Taylor teach salsa; Natalia Nelson and Jenny Taylor teach bachata; and Becky Magnuson teaches hustle.

Beginning level classes are designed for dancers with 0–4 months of experience and cover the basic salsa step, basic turns, cross-body lead, Cuban motion and partnering. Intermediate classes incorporate more complicated patterns, multiple turns and simple dips. An advanced level serves experienced dancers and those interested in performance; this level incorporates ballroom, Argentine tango and jazz styles, open footwork ("shines"), challenging lifts and dips, and advanced arm styling.

Private lessons are available for all levels at $75 for one session (single or couple), or $150 for a package of three lessons. Special event and private party bookings cost $175 for two hours, including demonstration, lesson and hosting. Private lessons are scheduled weeknights and Saturday by appointment; call for availability.

Genovia Dance runs a performance team with monthly dues of $45. The team performs at local venues including Folsom, the Placer Fair, Auburn, and the Opera House, with exhibitions scheduled throughout the year.

Students consistently praise the instructors for making classes fun and relaxed. Reviewers highlight Elliott's teaching style and humour, and note rapid improvement in technique. The studio emphasizes that no partner is necessary to join.
