Izizwe Dance Studio, led by Amy Xotyeni, is a non-competitive dance institution in Lawrence, Massachusetts, dedicated to high-quality dance education that is accessible to young people from all backgrounds. The studio focuses on building strong technique while fostering self-awareness, confidence, and expressive movement, serving both students pursuing professional dance careers and those who dance for enjoyment, healing, or self-expression.
Izizwe is also home to the Irise Dance Project, a non-profit organization and youth company (ages 8–18) that prioritizes artistic development, collaboration, and community impact over competition. The studio is rebranding as Irise Dance Project.
What to expect
Your first visit
Izizwe offers classes for children and youth ages 2.5 to 18. Expect a supportive, non-competitive environment emphasizing technique, confidence, and community. Drop-in African Dance classes are offered Tuesdays 7:15–8:15pm with live drumming, taught by South African dancer and drummer Mcebisi Xotyeni — all ages and abilities welcome, $10 per class with no registration required.
Studio history
Izizwe Dance Studio is transitioning to operate as Irise Dance Project, a nonprofit based at the studio. The studio recently moved into a new home in Lawrence, MA, and holds an annual Spring Showcase (9th annual in 2025, at Haverhill High School).
