About this studio
Jane Austen Dancers of Bath was founded in 1996, inspired by the 1995 BBC version of Pride and Prejudice and the Ball at Netherfield scene. It is the first and foremost Regency dance group in Bath and the UK. The group holds regular classes in Bath, the Georgian city where Jane Austen lived between 1801 and 1806 and where she set two of her published novels, Persuasion and Northanger Abbey.
Classes teach Regency and late Georgian period dances for all levels of ability, including non-dancers, with no age restriction. The research behind the classes is extensive, drawing from original sources and covering not only how to dance but also the etiquette, fashion, history and social customs of the period. Classes run on Wednesdays from 8pm to 10pm at the Scouts Bath District HQ hall, 7 Grove Street, Bathwick. You do not need a partner or costume to participate, though low or flat comfortable shoes (or dance shoes) are advisable. Drop-in attendance is welcome—you do not need to book, though newcomers are asked to complete a registration form before attending to ensure the venue has adequate capacity.
Beyond regular classes, the group holds an annual Ball, participates in the Jane Austen Festival, and takes on private and public functions including themed balls, hen parties, wedding receptions, parties, celebrations, talks, readings, workshops, exhibitions, photo-shoots and TV and film work. The repertoire covers dances from Jane Austen's lifetime as well as dances used in TV and film adaptations of her books. Performers wear authentic Empire-line costumes drawn from original sources. The group sources experienced callers and musicians as needed and provides guidance before and during events.
Research and curation is led by Elspeth Reed and Liz Bartlett. The group has a substantial archive of performances documented in photo albums and videos.
What to expect
Your first visit
On your first visit to a Wednesday class, arrive at Scouts Bath District HQ (7 Grove Street, Bathwick) in comfortable flat shoes, complete the new starter registration form, and join dancers of all ages and abilities learning Regency dances in a casual, friendly setting from 8pm to 10pm. Bring your own refreshments; none are provided.
