Melómano Entertainment - Salsa & Bachata Lessons

Melómano is a Salsa and Bachata dance studio in San Diego founded by Patrick Hernandez, who arrived in the city from New York in 2008 and has been building the community for 11 years. Patrick, alongside his wife Diana Trigo, has grown Melómano into one of San Diego's largest dance companies, training over 100 students of various levels and backgrounds. The studio offers group classes structured by level (Level 1, 2, 3, plus Ladies Styling), Dance Cycles—progressive 2-month courses where cohorts build skills together—Performance Teams for intensive, focused training, and private lessons with both instructors and coaches.

Classes are 50 minutes long and cost $17 per drop-in, with discounted packages available: 2 classes for $30, 5 for $60, 9 for $100, or 12 for $120. Discounted pricing is also available for underserved populations. The schedule runs seven days a week, including a free intro class on Sunday at noon. Monday through Thursday classes run from 6pm to 8:30pm; Saturday classes run 10am to 3pm. Partner rotations are built into every class, so no partner is required. Classes focus on both footwork and partner work, with students rotating through different partners.

Salsa On2 instruction covers fundamentals (Basic Side, Right Turn, Left Turn, Mambo, Cross Body Lead) at Level 1; syncopated footwork, half turns, axle turns, and sharp right turns at Level 2; and intricate footwork, shines, double turns, and reverse cross body leads at Level 3. Bachata progression moves from basics (Outside Basic, Front Cross, Back Cross, Hesitation Step, Inside and Outside Turns, Box Steps) at Level 1 through turn variations, cha-cha with the base, and delayed turns at Level 2, to syncopated footwork, turn combinations, reverse prep turns, and body waves at Level 3. There is also an Afro Cuban Cycle and both Salsa and Bachata Ladies Styling classes.

The studio hosts regular Melómano dance socials described as welcoming events where dancers apply what they've learned in a lively social setting. Additional events mentioned include Super Bowl parties and Karaoke Nights. Private lessons are available from instructors ($85 for one 45-minute session, or $425 for six sessions with one free) and coaches ($60 per session or $300 for six with one free). Lessons can focus on technique, timing, styling, choreography, or preparation for special events, and students can record practice videos to use at home.

Patrick Hernandez, director and co-founder, is a Salsa and Bachata instructor who has taught internationally and is known for hosting some of San Diego's best dance socials. His wife Diana Trigo, a dancer immersed in dance for over 13 years, is director and core instructor. Kevin has taught Salsa and Bachata for over 10 years and is known for breaking down complex moves. Valentin has enriched the scene for over a decade. Kat (Katarina Guillot), born in Antigua, Guatemala, is a dancer, choreographer, and performer. Analisa started young in jazz, hip-hop, and ballroom. Josue, originally from Detroit, began with breakdancing and hip-hop before expanding to reggaeton, ballroom, and Latin dance; reviews highlight his focus on fundamentals and his empathy. Amado is co-creator of Melómano's Study Hall and leads the Password Clinic for Salsa.

Beginner classes are designed for those with no prior experience; a free intro class runs every Sunday at noon, and instructors guide you through the basics in a supportive environment.
