NIAMOS manages the Nia Centre in Hulme, a multi-purpose arts venue and community hub. The building houses a 450-capacity theatre that hosts diverse performances, ranging from what they describe as the unbelievably beautiful through the fabulously fun to the stimulating and provoking. The centre provides workshops, classes and rehearsal spaces designed for the community to develop talent.
The basement is being transformed into music studios for rehearsals and recordings, plus a studio lab with workstations for classes and electronic music. This work is ongoing — the basement was originally the changing rooms of the original theatre and required extensive restoration work after being in a state of disrepair and suffering from flooding when NIAMOS took over the building.
NIAMOS describes itself as connecting the local community and artists from around the world. They work with local partners including Kim's Kitchen, Hulme Community Garden Centre, Free to Move Immigration Services, Spiral Garden Cafe (part of the Gaskell Garden Project), and NHS. The centre actively seeks to work with new organisations and welcomes event, activity and project ideas from the community. Volunteers are welcomed to help with events, community support and building transformation work.
