About this studio
Nottingham Lindy Hop teaches Social Lindy Hop, Vernacular Jazz Roots, Charleston and Balboa to adults in Sneinton. The studio has been running classes since April 2010, initially at The Old School Hall in front of Green's Windmill, and more recently at St Christopher's Church Hall on Trent Road. Classes were suspended in April 2020 due to the pandemic and related personal challenges, but returned in November 2022.
Lindy Hop classes run on the first three Sundays of each month. Level 1 (Foundations) starts at 5.15pm for beginners and improvers with no experience necessary. Level 2 (Improving) runs at 6.30pm and is suitable for those comfortable with fundamental six and eight count combinations using groove walks, triple steps and kicks/Charleston. There's a 15-minute practice and social time between levels at 6.15pm. Solo Jazz and Charleston classes run on Monday evenings, usually on the first three Mondays of each month, with check-in at 8pm for an 8.10pm start. These are all-levels classes starting from basics with expansions for experienced dancers.
The studio also hosts Sunday Jam, a monthly relaxed practice and social session usually held on the fourth Sunday, running from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. This is open to all dancers including those who do Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa and Jazz dance. Sunday Jam includes a shared food table (fuddle), tea, coffee, squash and biscuits. The studio runs special social events throughout the year, including Christmas Tea Dances and participates in community events like Hockley Hustle, where dancers perform on the streets to live swing music.
Drop-in classes require no booking and no partner is necessary. Leads and Follows rotate through Lindy Hop classes, and any gender can choose to dance any role. Beginners should ideally join in week 1 of each month, though drop-ins are welcome at any time. The studio emphasises that Lindy Hop is great exercise for both body and mind, allowing connection with rhythm, music and other dancers.
