About this studio

SalsaJoy teaches salsa dancing in Emersons Green, Bristol, with classes for beginners and improvers. Angela, the founder, has been dancing salsa for 15 years as both dancer and teacher. Before salsa, she competed nationally as a disco dancer and has taught African dance to children as young as 6. Her approach centres on good technique, musicality and connection — she wants you to feel amazing while dancing and to make your partner feel that too.

You'll learn mostly cross-body (on1) salsa, though the school also runs one-off classes in on2, cha cha and pachanga. Beginners start with a 4-week course covering the basics. Classes are held on Mondays at Emersons Green Village Hall and are structured so you change partners frequently — this matters for learning to lead and follow, not just copying routine. The school recognises that anyone can be any role, regardless of gender.

Beyond classes, SalsaJoy runs regular social nights. Their SALSAJAM parties happen on the third Friday of the month at Frenchay Village Hall and feature guest DJs and teachers — recent guests have included DJ Tuli from London and teacher Trevor Sweetlead. These are ticket events where you can practise in a social setting.

Private lessons are available for individuals, couples, weddings, corporate socials and parties. The school also teaches basic dancefloor etiquette to keep the social environment safe and enjoyable for everyone. You don't need to bring a partner to classes — the rotating partner system is central to how they teach.
