About this studio

Steps Dance Studio offers over 85 classes per week in Salsa and Bachata, split across five progressive levels from absolute beginner to advanced. Based at 819 Yonge Street in Toronto, the studio is built around a clear progression: Level 1 teaches basic steps and timing (10–12 classes recommended); Level 2 adds turns and footwork; Level 3 introduces cross-body lead patterns and musicality; Level 4 focuses on high-intermediate turns and styling; Level 5 pushes advanced technique, double spins and syncopations. Most classes run daily or several times weekly at each level.

The studio is led by Jennifer Aucoin (Founder and Executive Director) and Angelo De Torres (Artistic Director and co-owner). Jennifer has judged competitions across North America and represented Canada on the judging panel for the World Salsa Championships on ESPN. She founded and organizes the annual Canada Salsa & Bachata Congress, now in its seventeenth year—a major four-day international event in October featuring performances by over 80 dance companies. Angelo is a professional competitor who won the Canada Salsa and Bachata Congress and Chim Pum Callao Salsa Congress in professional Bachata, and has trained with world-renowned artists including Tito Ortos, Tamara Livolsi and Billy Fajardo.

Other instructors include Kathy De Torres (teaching since 2010, certified by Tito Ortos, teaching children's classes since 2016); Ernesto Campbell (16+ years' experience, former owner of SALSA STYLE in Honduras, world championship competitor, choreographer for Steps teams); and Fernanda Martin and Juan Pablo (winners of Salsa On 2 division at World Latin Dance Cup Chile qualifiers 2017, 1st Place in Copa Minga 2019). All instructors are Salsa-certified by Tito Ortos.

Beyond group classes, the studio runs performance classes in Salsa, Bachata, Cha Cha, Latin Hustle, Casino Rueda and Reggaeton throughout the year. Students learn full choreographed routines and perform at studio parties, nightclubs and events. Styling and Technique classes focus on posture, frame, hip motion and spinning. The studio also offers private lessons, free level assessments, wedding choreography consultations, studio rentals and kids' classes. Saturday Practicas run three times monthly for casual, partner-free practice in a relaxed setting.

The studio welcomes absolute beginners with no dance experience. New students get one free trial class and can purchase a one-month unlimited membership for $75 (new students only). No partner is required—all classes feature partner rotation. Classes can be booked up to a month in advance through the MindBody system.
