About this studio
Sydney Tango Collective teaches Argentine tango at Paddington Uniting Church every Tuesday. The studio is built on three core values: inclusion, respect, and growth. Classes run at three levels — Intro to Tango for Absolute Beginners, Tango Fundamentals, and Tango Concepts and Figures — and rotate through a methodical 4-week curriculum designed for social dancers.
The teaching team is led by Mo (founder) and Mona (founder), both acclaimed dancers who have trained with international icons including Sebastian Achaval & Roxana Suarez, Andres Laza Moreno, Lorena Ermocida, Leandro Oliver and Laila Rezk. Mo has been dancing tango since 2010 and is a well-known tango DJ invited to festivals across Australia and overseas. Mona, dancing since 2014, is one of the most acclaimed social tango dancers in Australia and travels the world to dance and DJ. The teaching collective is assisted by Sonny, Andrea, David, DJ Alex, Georgia, and Mariko — all experienced social dancers and community members.
Every Tuesday starts at 6:30 pm with Intro to Tango, followed by Tango Fundamentals at the same time (partner rotation), then Tango Concepts and Figures at 7:30 pm, and a free Social Dancing Practica at 8:30 pm. Your first class is free. The studio focuses on real-time feedback and small class numbers to ensure quality learning. After every class, students are invited to join the practice session with hands-on instructor guidance. The studio regularly arranges social gatherings and outings outside class times.
Most students arrive alone — you don't need a partner to join. The community skews towards people in their 20s to late 30s. Reviews consistently praise the welcoming, inclusive atmosphere, the instructors' warmth and skill, and the tight-knit sense of belonging. One student noted the instructors are "extremely warm, attentive and professional" and that the classes are "very beginner-friendly (with Advanced options available)." Another called it "a wonderful place to learn to dance" with a "brilliant" energy.
What to expect
Your first visit
Your first class is free. You'll arrive at Paddington Uniting Church and join a small group of mixed levels. Expect hands-on teaching focused on posture, walking, embrace, and connection rather than step memorisation. Partners rotate throughout the class. Afterwards, you're invited to stay for a free practice session where instructors give real-time feedback and you'll dance socially with other students.
