Tango Calgary

Tango Calgary is Calgary's oldest and largest tango school, operating out of the Olympia Dance Club in northeast Calgary. The studio teaches Argentine Tango, the partner dance that developed in Buenos Aires and is widely danced around the world. Argentine Tango here is taught as an interpretive, improvisational social dance that builds connection between dancers, music, and environment.

Classes run on Sundays year-round across a structured 11-course calendar. Beginner classes meet 8:00–8:55 PM and are open to everyone with no partner required. Advanced classes run 7:00–7:55 PM and require either instructor approval or a passing grade on the Advanced Class Exam (a 10-minute evaluation costing $10). The Beginner curriculum covers foundational material including Basic 8-Count Basics (Salida + Resolution), Hamaca, Forward and Backward Ocho, Gancho, Molinete (clockwise and counter-clockwise), and Front and Back Voleos. Beginner students are encouraged to spend one to two years at this level, repeating courses at their own pace. The Advanced level focuses on smooth movements, grace, and technical refinement over a recommended two to three years, with improved lead and follow skills allowing dancers to partner confidently with different dancers.

Leo Sato is the lead instructor and founder. He is Calgary's most recognized, award-winning tanguero and has mentored thousands of students over more than 20 years. Before dedicating himself to tango, Leo trained as a competitive bodybuilder and won a provincial championship. As a tango artist he has performed at the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra (Argentinian Night, 2022; Buenos Aires Night, 2016), Calgary Wind Symphony (Let's Dance!, 2022), Calgary Civic Symphony Orchestra (Festival da Musica, 2018), and won first place at the Sheraton Hotel Dance-off in 2019. He was a finalist in the Open Salon Tango Championship Senior division in Cali, Colombia (2017). Leo is also one of only a few tango bandoneon players in Canada and leads Cal Tango, the sole genuine tango orchestra in the region. He has over 10,000 YouTube subscribers and well over 3 million video views.

Marina Gonzalez is a tango dancer and instructor who began training at age seven in the USSR Youth Competitors Ballroom Dance Company and continued with the Russian Folk Dance Company. She has guest-performed at the International Salsa Congress and Rocky Mountain Grand Prix since immigrating to Canada, and has dedicated herself to teaching at Tango Calgary.

Yuki Oba is a passionate tango dancer and instructor who has spent over two years perfecting her skills under Leo Sato's tutelage. She has performed at dance shows, summer festivals, Latin cultural events, weddings, and music events featuring live orchestras, including performances with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

The studio offers group classes, private lessons with Leo Sato, and organizes custom tango events including shows and classes for external venues. A referral programme awards Practica tickets for bringing friends, and a reward stamps system gives a free course or lesson (for a $15 studio fee) after six paid enrollments.

Classes are held Sunday evenings at the Olympia Dance Club. Beginner classes run 8:00–8:55 PM with no partner required; you'll learn basic steps, lead and follow technique, and fundamental tango movements. Come to the first class with $70 cash to pay the promotional rate, or pre-register at the regular price of $80+GST.

Marina Gonzalez trained in ballroom and folk dance from childhood and has performed at international congresses. Yuki Oba has spent over two years developing her craft under Leo Sato and performs regularly at cultural events and weddings.

Beginner classes welcome everyone and require no partner; you can repeat courses at your own pace.
