About this studio
Tango In San Antonio (TISA) has been a hub for Argentine tango in Texas since its founding in 1999. Angela Avila, born in Puerto Rico and a San Antonio resident since 1979, established the studio and has been a leading force in the local tango community ever since. Since 2007, she has partnered with Roy Montejano, a San Antonio first responder, to teach Argentine tango together. Both are certified by the Artango School of Boston and regularly travel to Argentina, the Dominican Republic, and Canada to study with world-renowned tango masters.
The studio offers group classes, private lessons, and multi-day workshops, all focused on strong foundations, elegant form, and musical connection. Their teaching style emphasises Tango de Pista. Angela and Roy have more than 25 years of experience dancing Argentine tango—what one observer calls "mastery". They host milongas (social dancing events) and coordinate workshops in San Antonio.
Beyond regular instruction, TISA has earned significant recognition. Angela and Roy were named among the top 17 experts out of hundreds of dance teachers in San Antonio in 2016 and 2018, and were honoured as Honorary Argentine Tango Teachers by Casa Argentina of San Antonio in 2019. They have performed at the Majestic Theater, Guadalupe Arts Theater, and numerous community events. Angela co-founded the San Antonio Tango Festival (SATF) in 2022, which now draws top-tier talent from around the world and has been featured on KENS 5's Great Day SA.
The studio philosophy centres on connection, refined technique, and the joy of tango. Angela and Roy create a welcoming environment for students of all ages and backgrounds, emphasising that dancers thrive regardless of experience level. The studio regularly organises charity milongas and fundraising events supporting causes including autism awareness, Puerto Rico hurricane relief, the Food Bank for Houston, and PTSD awareness. They also offer a trip to Argentina each year—"Discover Argentina: An intensive workshop with Tango In San Antonio Students"—for those wanting to study in the dance's birthplace.
