About this studio
Tango Spirit has been teaching Argentine Tango in Sydney since 2001. The school is based at City of Sydney Creative Studios, 119 Bathurst Street in the CBD, and offers group classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at beginner and intermediate/advanced levels. Classes run for 55 minutes (one class per night) or 110 minutes (two classes back-to-back), with the first class covering fundamentals and the second exploring advanced skills.
Jacqueline Gutierrez Simpson founded Tango Spirit in 2006 with Anthony Miller. Jacqueline discovered tango in 1995 and has been teaching since 2001. She worked as an official representative of The World Tango Festival for Australia and New Zealand, translating classes from prominent Argentine teachers in Buenos Aires between 2001 and 2006. She was one of the directors of Tango Entre Amigos, one of Sydney's first traditional milongas since 2001, and co-founded Sydney Tango website, which lists all tango events in the city. Since 2008, Jacqueline has participated in empirical research on tango as a complementary therapy for depression, conducted through the University of New England.
Anthony Miller is a principal of Tango Spirit and serves as the resident DJ at the school's milongas. He holds a Master of Technical Sciences in robotics, artificial intelligence, and morphological forecasting models, and now works in animation and software development. Anthony has an extensive knowledge of tango music and maintains a collection of rare and unavailable tracks. He has been invited to DJ and perform at festivals worldwide, including Santiago, Seoul, Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Buenos Aires, Ljubljana, Lviv, Vladivostok, Istanbul, Bali, Jakarta, and Krakow. He was the official DJ for the Mundial Preliminaries in Indonesia and also teaches DJ classes in Sydney and internationally.
Classes emphasise technique, musicality, and the essence of tango as an art form. Each class concludes with an improvised tango performance by Jacqueline and Anthony demonstrating the moves taught, followed by informal practice time and social dancing where students can apply their skills and connect with fellow dancers.
Tango Spirit runs regular milongas (tango dance socials). The Milonga @ Haberfield takes place every fourth Friday of the month at St David's Uniting Church Hall, 51 Dalhousie Street, Haberfield. Additional milongas are held at venues around Sydney. The school also offers private bridal dance lessons with individually choreographed routines, and can provide performances or introductory lessons for corporate events, birthdays, and weddings.

Your first visit
Your first class is half price. Beginner classes are welcoming and teach fundamental combinations from the start. You'll learn in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere alongside a mix of people, and at the end of class you can stay to practise socially with other students.
