About this studio
Tango Leeds teaches Argentine Tango at New Burley Club on Burley Hill Drive in Kirkstall. Every Monday, the studio runs a structured three-level class followed by a milonga (social dance). The 7:15–8:15pm beginners class is designed for absolute beginners with no previous dance experience necessary. From 8:15–9:15pm, improvers develop their technique further. The milonga then runs from 9:15–10:45pm, giving you the chance to dance socially with others.
The teaching team includes Zerrin Fidan and Heather Charlton, who work with you at your own pace. You don't need to bring a partner—Argentine Tango is a social dance and the studio encourages partner changes throughout class to help you learn faster. If you prefer to stay with one partner, that's fine too. Both roles (leader and follower) are welcome, though the studio recommends completing a course in one role before learning the other.
Monthly milongas happen on the 3rd Friday of each month, running from 8pm with 4 hours of dancing. The music is primarily traditional tango arranged in tandas and cortinas, with occasional nuevo orchestras. The venue is candlelit and welcoming. Entry is £10 to the milonga alone, or included free with the weekly class. Smart dress is requested.
Tango Leeds regularly hosts international workshops and performances. Recent guests have included Monica & Omar Los Ocampo (legends of Argentine Tango with over 30 years as a partnership), Barbara Ferreyra & Agustin Agnez (2021 Tango World Champions), Silvana Prieto & Matias Batista Aleman (winners of the Tango Salon Championship in Buenos Aires), and Paula Duarte (a UK-based teacher with 30+ years of general dance experience and 15 years specialising in Argentine Tango, who has performed in Vincent Simone's Tango Passions touring production). These workshops cover technical elements like ganchos, barridas, voleos, giros, ochos, musicality, and role-specific technique.
For intensive learning, Tango Leeds offers a 5-hour beginners bootcamp (£35 per person, £60 per couple), which consolidates core basics in a single day. The venue has free parking on site, a bar, and a sprung dance floor suitable for Argentine Tango.
