About this studio
Tango Vibe LA is run by Jerry Matias and Christine Urgell, professional dancers and teachers with more than 20 years of experience. The pair have been based in Los Angeles since 2011 and continue to teach, coach, perform, and host social events. In 2025, they placed 7th in the "Milongueros del Mundo" category at the prestigious Campeonato de Baile de la Ciudad (El Metropolitano) in Buenos Aires, where they regularly travel to study and perform.
The studio offers a structured progression of group classes across five levels, from beginner introduction through intermediate and advanced. Level 1 focuses on fundamental elements: balance, basic timing, partner connection, and floor craft (navigation). Level 2 is a two-part beginner course teaching tango structure and improvisation, covering the Parallel and Cross systems, lead and follow, and social dance etiquette (codigos). Level 3 is for beginner/intermediate dancers who understand the fundamentals and can execute figures like the embrace, walking, ochos, giros, and sacadas. Levels 4 and 5 serve experienced dancers with at least 2–3 years of consistent class attendance and milonga experience.
Private lessons are also available for students seeking personalized attention. Lessons are customized to individual needs and run 50 minutes each; packages expire after 12 weeks. Material covers technique for the social dance floor, both close and open embrace, improvisation, footwork, embellishments, and choreography.
Beyond classes, Tango Vibe hosts social dancing events including La Guapa, a New Years Milonga, and regular practicas. The studio also offers wedding dance choreography, tango team training, and shows. Jerry and Christine teach with an emphasis on simplifying complex information while building technical understanding, with a focus on improvisation, timing, musicality, and dynamics. They have travelled, taught, and performed internationally in cities including Buenos Aires, Paris, Madrid, and venues across the United States.
