About this studio
The Mambo Collective has taught salsa and mambo in Sheffield and South Yorkshire since October 2001, starting with just three students in an improver class. The founders wanted to raise the level of salsa dancing in the city and help dancers hold their own with dancers from across the UK. A beginners course launched in January 2002, and the collective has since taught hundreds of students across multiple levels.
You'll study authentic New York style salsa and mambo using On2 (mambo) timing. The teaching philosophy is technique-first: footwork and basic techniques must be thoroughly grooved before you can dance freely and enjoy moving with a partner. Once those foundations are solid, styling and body movement become the finishing touches. Classes run on a rotating 12-week syllabus across five classes split over two nights, ranging from novice salsa to intermediate mambo.
The teachers actively dance socially at least once a week in the North and Midlands, and regularly attend congresses and weekenders across the UK. They take classes and workshops with top teachers worldwide to stay current. This commitment to the dance floor informs their teaching: they encourage students to social dance and regularly share what's on in the wider scene, often travelling together to different venues.
Beyond regular classes, the collective offers private tuition (available in both On1 and On2), intensive one-day workshops called Fiat 2 Ferrari, and specialist workshops in mambo, spinning and turning, and lead and follow technique. On Tuesday evenings, class members head to Sylvester's Bar for a social and practice session.
The founders are Dave and Sue Howard. Sue joined the collective in April 2007 after the original co-founder moved to Derby. Both are known for technical precision in their dancing and teaching.
