Biography
Domen Krapez is a Slovenian-born Standard ballroom competitor and professional dancer who rose to prominence through international amateur competition before achieving major championship success in professional ballroom. His early career was marked by partnerships within the WDSF amateur system, including a notable 2003–2005 pairing with Monica Nigro representing Slovenia. In 2005, Krapez and Nigro won the WDSF International Open Standard in Albena, establishing him as a competitive force in European amateur ballroom.
In the mid-2010s, Krapez transitioned to the professional circuit, forming a partnership with German champion Natascha Karabey around 2014. Representing Germany, the pair quickly ascended the competitive rankings. Specialist profiles credit them with a 2018 World Professional Show Dance title, marking an early achievement in their professional collaboration.
The pinnacle of Krapez and Karabey's career arrived in 2021. That year they won the British Professional Ballroom championship, the WDC World Professional Ballroom championship, and the World Dance Organisation World Professional Ballroom championship held in Warsaw on 19 December. The couple followed this success by winning the United Kingdom Professional Ballroom championship in 2022. In October 2022, an industry announcement marked their retirement from competition, closing a competitive career that spanned nearly two decades and crossed multiple governing bodies and national representations.
Legacy & Impact
Krapez's career bridges Slovenian amateur ballroom traditions with the professional German and international championship circuit, exemplifying how dancers build competitive identity across different national systems and dance organisations. His partnership with Karabey demonstrated that championship-level success in professional ballroom demands years of separate development before culminating in multiple-organization dominance. For contemporary dancers, Krapez represents the pathway from amateur international competition through professional specialization to world championship recognition across distinct governing bodies.
