Kumman Narayanan Gurukkal, generally styled K

K. Narayanan Gurukkal was born in 1927 in Azhikode, Kannur District, Kerala, into a family with hereditary knowledge of Ayurveda, Sanskrit, and Kalaripayattu. He began learning both disciplines at age eight under his father, then continued training in Kozhikode with Gopalan Gurukkal, Kumaran Gurukkal, and Ayyappan Pillai Gurukkal, drawing on a lineage connected to C. V. Narayanan Nair Gurukkal and other masters in that tradition.

In 1950, Narayanan Gurukkal founded CVN Kalari Nadakav at Nadakkavu in Kozhikode. The school integrated martial training with marma chikitsa—the therapeutic knowledge of vital points—and structured its teaching through progressive stages: meythari body preparation, kolthari wooden-weapons work, ankathari metal-weapons practice, and verumkai unarmed application. This system developed balance, coordination, flexibility, weapon skill, and embodied knowledge as a unified path.

Under Narayanan's direction, CVN Kalari extended beyond local practice into Malayalam cinema, beginning with the 1964 film Thacholi Othenan. The institution later expanded into Indian and international film, theater, workshops, and touring performance, building visibility for the art across multiple platforms.

Narayanan Gurukkal died on 24 December 2000. His sons Anil, Sunil, and Gopakumar, each trained from childhood within the family tradition, continued stewardship of the Kozhikode school. His legacy persists not as historical monument but as a working lineage passed through multiple generations of students and descendants.
