Kamo Mphela

Kamo Mphela, professionally known as Kamogelo Matona, is a South African dancer, choreographic performer, and recording artist who emerged as a central figure in amapiano's global rise. Growing up in Soweto, she encountered performance spaces early through her father's work in media and events. She experimented with acting but increasingly centered dance, learning how short, camera-ready movement phrases could travel beyond live venues through digital platforms.

Videos of her dancing circulated widely on Instagram and other platforms near the end of the 2010s. Her precision, energy, facial play, and rapid stylistic switching made her an identifiable performer within amapiano's expanding audiovisual culture. By 2019, Mphela had moved into recorded music, releasing the Twentee project and collaborating with artists across South Africa's dance-music scene. Her appearances in "Amanikiniki" with MFR Souls, "SBWL" with Busiswa, and other releases reinforced the reciprocal structure of her career: music generated choreography, while dance visibility generated listeners.

Her 2021 project Nkulunkulu consolidated a solo recording identity. In 2023, "Dalie," with Tyler ICU, Khalil Harrison, and Baby S.O.N, became a major streaming and dance success. Throughout this period, Mphela's work illustrated how platform visibility, choreography, and social-dance exchange interweave in contemporary amapiano culture. In 2024, she won Basadi in Music Awards recognition including Amapiano Artist of the Year and Music Video of the Year, and performed at Piano People / Afro Nation Portugal.
