Shawn Tay

Shawn Tay is a Singaporean DanceSport leader whose career spans three decades of competitive performance, national federation building, and international sport governance. Beginning in 1982, he competed in Standard and Latin ballroom with his wife and dance partner, Gladys Tay. The couple travelled to England in 1984 to deepen their training, entered the European competitive circuit, and accumulated more than twenty international titles before retiring from competition in 1994. Their competitive years became the foundation for institutional work that would reshape DanceSport in Singapore and beyond.

After retiring from the floor in 1994, Tay expanded into coaching, adjudication, education and event organization. Through the Shawn and Gladys Dance Academy, the couple coached competitors and built a sustained training base. In 1986, Tay founded the Singapore DanceSport Federation, playing a major role in formalizing organized competitive DanceSport within Singapore's ballroom scene. His adjudicator qualifications covered Standard, Latin, Ten Dance and corresponding Professional Division disciplines across multiple international competitions and national programs.

Tay's relationship with the World DanceSport Federation developed over decades of service. He received the WDSF President's Award in 2003 and joined the Presidium in 2004, advancing through roles including general secretary, vice-president for sport, and first vice-president. In 2010, he was assigned to supervise DanceSport's inaugural competition at the Asian Games in Guangzhou. A 2014 WDSF annual-meeting agenda listed him as general secretary and chair of the DanceSport Academy. The federation later documented twenty-one years of service across senior offices.

On 17 November 2018, Tay assumed the presidency of the World DanceSport Federation at the World Championship Standard in Vienna, following Lukas Hinder's resignation and formal handover. He became the first Singaporean to lead the federation. His presidency has emphasized making multiple DanceSport disciplines ready for major multi-sport games and improving competition formats for athletes. WDSF's management directory continues to list Tay as president, and federation statements as recently as 2025 document him speaking in that capacity.

Tay's career demonstrates a movement between three kinds of dance leadership: performing and competing alongside Gladys, building Singaporean coaching and competition infrastructure, and governing an international federation whose remit now extends beyond Standard and Latin into disciplines such as Breaking. His significance to dance history lies in that trajectory from local practice to global administration, while his artistic contribution remains inseparable from Gladys Tay's partnership.
