About this studio
Afshi Rani is a franco-Pakistani dancer who has been dancing since childhood, shaped by Bollywood films and her cultural roots. Before specializing in Bollywood, she explored hip-hop, oriental, and modern-jazz styles. She began teaching Bollywood dance at 18, working in MJCs (youth centres) and social centres for 8 years before founding her own association, Bollywood Style by Rani. During the first lockdown, she offered free dance classes three times a week on Facebook, then expanded to online sessions from the 2020 season onwards.
Afshi has built a significant following on TikTok, where she shares dance choreography, language lessons, cultural anecdotes, and her personal story—including awareness about forced marriage. Her work caught the attention of Brut., which interviewed her and amplified her cultural message about Pakistan and South Asian dance.
Bollywood dance, as Afshi teaches it, is rhythmic contemporary theatre where every movement carries meaning: joy, pain, love, and sadness are all expressed through the body. It is a dance without gender boundaries—men and women are equally welcome. While often imagined as group dancing, it brings equal pleasure in solo or small-group settings. The style encompasses everything from gentle songs about impossible love to energetic party anthems, and one of the school's missions is to introduce students to this variety so they find their own voice within it.
Classes run from locations including Le Palais de Rani (5 rue du Garet, 69001 Lyon, Hôtel de ville) and Centre social « la condition des soies » (7 rue saint Polycarpe, 69001 Lyon). Afshi also offers workshops, event choreography services (Bolly Events), and fitness-focused classes (BollyFit) from summer 2021 onwards. Registration opens 15 August 2025 with classes beginning Monday 1 September.
