About this studio

Baltimore Dance Tech was established in 1999 by Yvonne E. Walker and Stephanie Powell. The studio presents dance as a healing art, grounded in a family-centred approach that aims to provide professional-level dance education for all students. Located in the Ten Hills neighbourhood at the West Baltimore United Methodist Church, the school operates Wednesday 6:30 pm–8:30 pm, Thursday 6:30 pm–9:15 pm, and Saturday 9:00 am–3:00 pm.

The studio teaches Creative Movement (ages 3–4), PreDance (ages 4–6), Ballet (ages 6–18), Pointe (ages 12–18), Tap (ages 5–18), Modern (ages 6–18), Hip Hop (ages 6–18), and African dance. Classes are run by dance education specialists in the Baltimore-Washington area who are encouraged to continue their own professional development. The school emphasizes instruction based on development rather than age, with performance opportunities at school and in the community.

Stephanie Powell, Artistic Director, is a Johns Hopkins University graduate with a Masters Degree in Liberal Arts and an undergraduate degree in Dance Education from Goucher College. She has taught ballet and modern dance for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Cirque du Soleil, The Lion King, and The Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Theatre. She was on faculty at the Baltimore School for the Arts for twenty-one years and currently teaches at Carver Center for the Arts and Technology. Yvonne E. Walker, a graduate of Sojourner Douglass College with a degree in Business Administration, serves as Board Chair of the International Association of Blacks In Dance (IABD) and brings over 40 years of operations management and customer service experience.

The studio runs a Winter Concert called The City Nutcracker and a Spring Concert, both including costume rental, tickets, cast t-shirt, souvenir programme, and video download of performances. The Sizzling Summer Dance Camp runs from June 22 to August 1 for ages 5–16, featuring ballet, hip hop, modern, tap, African dance and more over six weeks.
