About this studio
Baza Dance Studios occupies 1304 Seymour Street in downtown Vancouver and runs a full schedule of partner dance courses and solo dance drop-in classes. The studio teaches salsa in three recognised styles (Casino/Salsa Cubano, L.A. On1, and New York On2/Mambo), bachata across modern, fusion, and sensual traditions, kizomba with an emphasis on its Angolan roots and musical rhythms, and Brazilian zouk characterised by long flowy movements and upper body work. Solo classes include reggaeton, zumba, afrobeats, and salsa/bachata footwork and styling.
Partner dance courses run in progressive levels. Salsa has five levels: absolute beginner (Intro), Fundamentals, advanced On1, Transition to On2, and advanced On2. Bachata moves through Intro, Fundamentals, then splits into Fusion and Sensual tracks at Level 3, with a Level 4 split continuing and Level 5 Artistry available. Kizomba and Brazilian Zouk each have three levels. No partner is required to register for any course. Beginner courses (Intro level) are open to all with no prerequisites; progression beyond that typically requires completion of the previous level or an assessment arranged by email.
The studio also runs weekly social events: Bachatopia on Tuesday nights (9:30pm–midnight, $12 cover), Baza Fridays (9pm–12:30am, $15 cover, with a club lesson 9–9:30pm followed by social dancing), Saturday Salsa Bachata Practica (3–4:30pm, $5 cash), and Tuesday Kizomba Practica (9:35–10:35pm, $5 cash). Outdoor socials take place at Robson Square on Sunday summer evenings (free) and at Oakridge Park on select Saturdays (free lesson at 6pm, social dancing until 8:45pm).
Kids programmes include Dance Explorers (ages 4–6) on Thursday and Hip-Hop Dance (ages 7–9) on Tuesday, designed to build confidence, coordination, and body awareness in a supportive environment. The studio also offers a Discovery Pack for solo dance newcomers ($45 for three classes, new students only) and one-day beginner workshops in salsa and bachata. First-time visitors can attend a Get To Know (GTK) workshop—monthly two-hour introductions to both salsa and bachata open to all skill levels and backgrounds, with no partner required.
