About this studio
Britannia Dance is run by Sam Ellis, a professional dance teacher with over 20 years of experience. Sam holds IDTA qualifications as a Ballroom Licentiate and Latin Associate, and developed his love of dancing through his parents' influence. The studio offers a full range of Ballroom and Latin styles taught in a warm, supportive environment open to all ages and abilities — from absolute beginners to competitive dancers working toward medals.
Classes are held at the purpose-built Britannia Dance Studio in Stroud (Cashes Green Road), with additional sessions in Cirencester (Chesterton Primary School Hall) and Bristol locations including Emersons Green Village Hall (Mondays), Southbank Club in Southville (Tuesdays), and Britannia Studio in Cainscross. The teaching philosophy centres on developing essential basics with good technique, then progressing to advanced figures and choreography. Music selection is a key emphasis — classic and contemporary tracks are chosen to enhance the learning experience.
The studio teaches Ballroom styles (Waltz, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Tango) and Latin styles (Cha Cha, Jive, Samba, Rumba, Salsa, Paso Doble). Classes run throughout the year in term blocks, with beginner classes starting regularly and improver-level classes available for those with some experience. Sam's students have achieved high grades in medal examinations and competitive success at IDTA competitions; his professional coaching candidates have gained distinctions in IDTA professional status work.
Beyond group classes, Britannia Dance offers private tuition tailored to individual needs, wedding dance lessons designed to suit each couple's style and song, and children's ballroom classes. The studio also hosts social dances normally held on Tuesdays at Eastcombe Village Hall (2.30–4.30 pm, open to students and non-students), and Salsa nights held fortnightly on Friday evenings in Stroud for beginners to intermediate level. Studio hire and party bookings are available for those wanting to use the venue for their own events.
