About this studio

The Broken Spoke, established in 1964, is a genuine Texas honky-tonk and dance hall located at 3201 S Lamar Blvd in Austin. Owner James M. White built the venue from the ground up and still runs it today. The space has earned the title "Last of the True Texas Dancehalls" and hosts live country music, dancing, and dinner service throughout the week.

Two-step lessons run Wednesday through Saturday from 8–9pm, taught by Terri White, a dance instructor voted the best by Texas Highways and featured on Queer Eye Season 6. Her classes fill up fast and cover traditional two-step, Western Swing, and the Cotton-Eyed Joe—the only line-dance allowed on the dancefloor. She teaches the fundamentals you need to join the dancing, and private lessons are also available. Lessons cost $10 plus your cover charge, and you're asked to arrive by 7:30pm to sign up.

The venue opens Tuesday through Thursday from 4pm–midnight and Friday–Saturday from 4pm–1:30am. The dancehall doors open at 7:15pm. Every Tuesday at 8:15pm, Two-Step Tuesdays feature live music with Weldon Henson. Live bands play six nights a week, with dinner and a show in the restaurant from 6–8pm Tuesday through Saturday at no cover charge (tips go to the band). The kitchen serves Chicken Fried Steak and BBQ.

The Broken Spoke also hosts private parties, corporate events, and weddings. The venue has handled catering and events for over 50 years, working with clients including Google, Domino's Pizza, Thundercloud Subs, Tito's Vodka, and the Austin Convention & Visitor's Center. It has hosted movie wrap parties for Robert Duvall and Quentin Tarantino, and many wedding receptions. Catering options include BBQ dinners for large groups, Chicken Fried Steak, or appetizer buffets. Private dance lessons can be arranged for events.
