About this studio
Brooklyn Swings teaches Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, and Blues Dancing across three neighbourhoods: Prospect Heights on Mondays, Gowanus on Tuesdays, and Bushwick on Wednesdays. The studio describes swing dances as Black American Culture Dances that were made popular in Harlem, NY and are danced all over the world today.
Weekly classes run at 7:00 pm for Level I Swing Dances at all three locations. Prospect Heights adds an 8:00 pm Blues Dancing class (all levels); Gowanus adds an 8:00 pm Level II Swing Dances class; Bushwick's Level I class starts at 6:15 pm. No partner is required for any class. The studio also hosts private lessons, wedding dance lessons, and private events.
Private lessons cost $100/hour for 1–2 people, or $90/hour when booking a 3-pack or more, plus studio fee. Wedding lessons start at $125/hour for 1–2 people and typically run 3–5 sessions. The studio helps couples prepare first dances with a spouse or parent, group lessons for wedding parties, and full choreography if desired. Past couples have praised instructors for teaching lead and follow technique and creating unique dances to chosen songs.
Brooklyn Swings supports the goals and vision of Black Lives Matter and the LGBTQ+ communities out of respect and appreciation to those who founded and developed these spaces. The studio actively participates in the broader New York swing scene, hosting a monthly Swing dance in Bushwick (COBRA Swing) and a monthly Meet Up Blues Dance in Manhattan (Terra Blues). Brooklyn Swings also shared Lindy Hop at MidSummer Night Swing at the Lincoln Center.
