About this studio
Corner Pocket Swing teaches the vintage swing dances of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. You'll find them at The Danish Club, 36 Austin Street in Newstead, where they run two weekly classes: Lindy Hop on Tuesday nights and Balboa on Thursday nights, both at 6:30pm.
Lindy Hop comes from Harlem, New York, and is a melting pot of jazz movement with flashy swing-outs and Charleston kicks, usually danced to mid-tempo swing tunes. Balboa originated in 1930s Southern California and is closely partnered, refined, and designed for those up-tempo jazz numbers. Both styles are still danced worldwide. They occasionally run special classes in other swing era styles: Slow Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Solo Jazz, and Blues.
Each night runs three time slots. Level 1 Fundamentals (for beginners) starts at 6:30pm, Level 2 Explorers at 7:45pm, and a third slot at 8:45pm for special classes or free practice. The floor is slightly sprung timber with medium grip, and the room is well air-conditioned. All regular weekly classes are 1 hour long and run in drop-in format, so you can start any week—no commitment needed if you have other commitments. No partner is required; the studio rotates partners throughout class.
They welcome all ages, cultures, genders and orientations. Minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Level 2 students may attend the Level 1 class on the same night at no additional cost. The studio also offers private lessons and small group sessions for focused learning, wedding choreography, or fast-tracking specific skills. Three-hour beginner Introduction Workshops run on the 2nd Saturday of the month.
Corner Pocket Swing was formed in 2015 by Alice and Matthew Greenwood. In 2020 it passed to Robert Edwards and Emma Hadfield, and in 2025 to Elley King. The teachers are a collective of swing dance enthusiasts who share the joy of the dance. The studio takes safety and community seriously, with a Code of Conduct that all attendees must follow.
What to expect
Your first visit
Come to a 1-hour drop-in class where you'll learn a repeatable basic footwork pattern, then build moves from it. You'll rotate partners throughout (roles like Lead and Follow have never been gender-specific here). More experienced dancers often attend beginner classes to help numbers and pace. Warm up with some easy solo movement to music, then ask teachers—not classmates—if something is unclear.
