Leah and Jean-Philippe, the founders and instructors, have over twenty years of experience in tango. They learned in France and Argentina, and have spent significant time in the milongas of Buenos Aires, where they developed their approach with guidance from established maestros and maestras. They continue to travel regularly to Buenos Aires to stay connected to the living tradition.
Their teaching philosophy centres on what they call tango interior and tango exterior. Tango interior is danced within the abrazo—the embrace—and focuses on connection with your partner; this is tango de bal, the social dance. Tango exterior is for display and spectacle. The studio emphasises developing sensitivity to movement, body awareness, and the connection between partners rather than teaching sequences of steps. Beginners explore the fundamentals through walking and an understanding of how the dance is built, equipping dancers to adapt and dance with many different partners.
Classes run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons across both venues: Salle Couronnes (81 Rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, M° Couronne) and Salle Voltaire (16 Rue Basfroi, M° Voltaire). Tuesday evenings at Salle Couronnes include an Intermediate class from 19h30 to 21h, followed by open practice from 21h to 21h30. The studio also offers one practice session per month on a Sunday, and every Wednesday they run La Práctica Victor, an assisted practice open to all dancers. During summer, private lessons are available by phone appointment.
Stages (workshops) are offered in tango, vals, and milonga, exploring dialogue between partners, musicality, and figures that emerge from the rhythms available in a social dance setting. The studio also hosts La Milonga Victor on Wednesday evenings, a social dance event that has run from the same studios for nine years. Originally for their own students, it has grown into a welcoming space for all dancers seeking to put their learning into practice and experience the culture of the milonga.
