About this studio
Shake That Swing teaches Lindy Hop, Charleston, and Solo Jazz in Paris's 11th arrondissement from their own studio at 25 Rue Pétion. The studio occupies 210 m² with a 140 m² dance floor and can hold up to 193 people standing or 60 seated. They offer courses at seven different levels, from absolute beginners to advanced dancers, with weekly classes running from September to June. Beginner courses start with a trimester option to allow people to try the style without financial pressure; intermediate and advanced courses run for the full year. Solo Jazz classes operate on a flexible pass system — you can buy cards of 10 or 20 classes, or an unlimited pass, and attend whenever suits you.
The school's teaching philosophy centres on music first and rhythm, with regular partner rotation in group classes to help you learn faster and build community. You can sign up as a leader, follower, or switch (if you have the level in both roles), and the school actively balances the ratio of each in every course to ensure everyone has a good learning experience. Beginner courses don't assign dance roles in advance — you test both and choose what suits you. The team includes teachers who travel internationally to train and bring back new material; guest instructors from around the world lead residencies roughly once a year. The school holds monthly initiations in the studio and also runs free introductory lessons at the start of many of their Bal Swing events, so you can sample the style before committing.
Beyond classes, Shake That Swing runs a busy social calendar. They organise regular Bal Swing dances, free practice sessions and social dances for students (tea parties, afterwork events), and special events like Gatsby-themed soirées. The school also offers private lessons, workshops and stages, team-building events, wedding and EVJF (hen party) packages, and can arrange themed animations. Their own studio is available to rent for events ranging from dance workshops to corporate seminars, film shoots and conferences.
The studio emphasises inclusion and respect. Gender does not determine which role you dance; you can be any gender and lead, follow, or switch (with partner consent). The school welcomes all sexual orientations, backgrounds and dance levels, and makes a point of honouring the African-American cultural roots of swing dance. They work closely with live musicians and regularly host film screenings, talks and cultural exchanges to deepen understanding of swing's history and significance.
