About this studio
Dublin Porteños Tango teaches Argentine Tango in Phibsborough, north Dublin. The studio offers Group Tango Classes catering to all levels from beginners to advanced dancers, Intensive Seminars, and Private Tango Lessons. You do not need a partner to join — the studio encourages individuals and rotates partners during class so everyone dances with different people. Couples who prefer to stay together are welcome to do so.
Stephen, a North Side Dublin native, has spent the last 12+ years learning, performing and teaching Argentine Tango all over the world. He has taught in Tango schools in Dublin (chairing the Dublin Tango Society), Boston, Sydney and Singapore, and performed with the Tango Puro Tango Ensemble in Australia, including performances at the Sydney Opera House. He has danced in over 50+ countries at various festivals and events.
The studio runs regular milongas — social dance nights with live music, DJs and surprises. These are full social events where dancers can practise in a welcoming community setting. Free beginners' classes are often offered at milongas to introduce newcomers to the dance.
Dublin Porteños Tango emphasises the encuentro — the meeting and connection that Tango creates. The dance is described as meditation and shared communication between partners. While performance opportunities are organized throughout the year for students who want to showcase their skills, the primary focus is on creating good social dancers and building community. Stephen's goal is to share his passion and knowledge of the dance, its history and music, and grow the Tango community on the North Side of Dublin.

Studio history
Stephen discovered Tango after witnessing a chance performance at his college dance society and fell in love with the dance. Within six months he travelled to Buenos Aires for intensive classes. The studio name Dublin Porteños references Dublin's parallel history as a port city — the Monto area near the port was the biggest red light district in Europe and the birthplace of Tango in Buenos Aires in the 1920s. The name also references historical Irish-Argentine connections, including the 1920 song 'the Irish Tango' by Henry Burr and the story of Tomás Moore, possibly Irish, who brought the bandoneon to Argentina in 1870.
