About this studio
The El Paso Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) is a cultural institution dedicated to celebrating the dynamic traditions and resiliency of border cultures through vibrant arts experiences. Opened following a 2012 Quality of Life Bond approved by El Paso voters, the MACC provides residents and visitors with a dynamic space for the creation, exhibition and celebration of Mexican American art and culture.
The centre offers classes and workshops in a range of disciplines including dance, textile arts, culinary, painting, printmaking, theatre, and design. Educational programming is designed to engage the community by celebrating and preserving Mexican American arts, culture and history. The MACC works with local Mexican American artists, makers and culture bearers to create spaces for learning, creativity, innovation and accessibility.
Dance classes currently available include Danzón (taught by Elizabeth Flores), which explores the origins, basic steps, and choreography of this Cuban-origin dance form that arrived in Mexico in 1880, and Salsa and Bachata instruction (taught by Eduardo Portillo), tailored for dancers seeking confidence with step-by-step techniques for leading and following. The centre also offers fitness and wellness classes such as Yoga + Kickboxing Fusion, Gentle Yoga, and meditation sessions.
The MACC is housed in versatile educational spaces including a Dance Classroom, Art Classroom, and Digital Classroom, designed to support performances, exhibitions, workshops, and gatherings. Classes are drop-in or registration-based depending on the offering, with many sessions free or low-cost. The centre is located on Indigenous lands and acknowledges the nations and stories of the peoples whose territories include the region.
Beyond regular classes, the MACC hosts summer camps, special events such as Noche del Divo and Día de los Muertos Festival, and community productions. The institution is part of the El Paso Museums & Cultural Affairs Department.
