About this studio
Indepen-dance is an award-winning inclusive dance company based in Bridgeton, Glasgow, serving disabled and non-disabled people. The organisation runs weekly creative movement and dance classes throughout the year, where participants become lifelong members and join a thriving social network. Classes are conducted in a safe and appropriate environment, designed to be fun, creative and accessible to all, with a focus on improvisation and moving together.
The studio offers three categories of classes. Core classes run on a term-by-term basis in Glasgow for members, including adult classes on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (one hour long, with morning and afternoon sessions available), children and youth classes on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and specialised classes for varying ages and abilities. Outreach classes run outside Glasgow for children, youths and families. Specialised classes include Dance Your Socks Off for 0–5 year olds and their parent or carer (30 minutes, Thursday mornings at the Tramway), Professional Technique for experienced dancers (Wednesday mornings, pay what you can), and Touchtrust for those with complex disabilities focusing on creative movement, sounds and sensory work (Thursday afternoons at the Tramway).
Classes take place at multiple locations across Glasgow, including the main studio at 159–161 James Street in Bridgeton, the Tramway (Scottish Ballet Studio), Pearce Institute in Govan, Maryhill Community Centre, and Pollokshaws Burgh Hall. Many classes also run online via Zoom, offering hybrid and fully remote options. Adult core classes cost £7 per class on a pay-as-you-go basis, or £6 per class when booked as a block for the number of weeks in the term. Dance Your Socks Off costs £4 for one child or £5 for two, with block booking discounts available. Touchtrust costs £7 per drop-in session.
Beyond weekly classes, Indepen-dance runs performance companies including a Professional Touring Company, Adult Performance Company (invitation only, Wednesday mornings at the Tramway), and Young 1'z, an invitation-only youth performance group for ages 16–25 (Wednesday evenings at Pearce Institute). The organisation also provides bespoke professional training, career development and employment opportunities. A free taster session is available for those interested in joining core classes.
