About this studio
Kanvas Academy teaches Street Dance and Cheerleading to children aged 4 and upwards in Wallsend, North Shields. The academy was started on 7 February 2017 by students who wanted to pass on their dance knowledge to others. What began with very few students has grown into a family of over 60 students and instructors.
The academy's teaching approach centres on building strong foundations and proper technique from the start. New students learn the basics step by step in a supportive environment, with instructors described as experienced in their dance fields. Classes focus on real dance technique, performance skills, teamwork, and confidence-building rather than assuming prior experience.
Street Dance classes run on Mondays: ages 4–7 from 6:15–7:15 PM, and ages 8+ from 7:15–8:15 PM. Cheerleading classes run on Sundays (ages 4–7, 12:00–1:00 PM) and Wednesdays (ages 8+, 6:15–7:15 PM). All classes are designed to be beginner-friendly, with no dance experience needed.
As students progress, they're invited to take part in competitions run throughout the year, building stage confidence and earning medals and trophies alongside their classmates. The academy runs regular competition events at venues across the North East and beyond, including Hip-Hop competitions in Manchester and Accrington, and cheerleading events in Wakefield, Durham, Scotland, and Darlington.
Members gain 24-hour access to member groups and online videos to learn at home. Memberships start at £50 per month, with a free week trial available (no commitment, no fees). Dance uniforms are available to purchase from the online store but are not mandatory. For a free trial, children simply need to wear trainers and comfortable clothing.

Your first visit
Your child joins a normal class for a free week trial and gets to experience what coming every week would be like. Most children settle in within their first session, even if they start feeling shy or nervous. You'll see them learning real dance technique and building confidence alongside new friends.
