About this studio
Moonlight Tango is a not-for-profit association built by unpaid volunteers and dedicated to Argentine tango in Brisbane. The organisation was born from a desire to enrich the tango community and grew from its first event in January 2020 — a crowd-funded free milonga with live music by Mendoza Tango Quartet, held outside the Gallery of Modern Art with over 200 dancers and music-lovers.
During the pandemic, Moonlight Tango continued to develop the local scene, live-streaming Orchestra Romantica Milonguera from Buenos Aires to Brisbane, Melbourne and Perth, and hosting weekend Musicality Masterclasses with maestros from Europe and Argentina. The organisation later hosted intimate milongas at C'est Bon Restaurant and Evita Restaurant, and offered free beginners classes with local teachers to grow the tango community.
In 2022, Moonlight Tango incorporated as a formal not-for-profit association (ABN 13861926511). The following year, the Winter Tango Festival became the flagship event: an 8-day festival featuring more than 60 hours of entertainment with over 300 dancers from four continents. The 2023 festival included maestros Vanesa & Facundo from Argentina, Gianpiero & Lorena from Italy, world champions Cynthia & Sebastian, and local stars Nadim & Rina, with live music from Tango Bardo performing directly from Buenos Aires. All milongas are held in the Ithaca Auditorium at Brisbane City Hall.
Moonlight Tango's management team includes President Korey Pagura, an accredited clinical social worker and registered psychologist with over 20 years' professional experience and a long personal history with Brisbane tango since 1998; Eve, a physiotherapist whose work focuses on tango's therapeutic power; and Jorge Robles, treasurer, who has been involved in the Brisbane tango community for more than 20 years. All profits from events are donated to selected charities, including Parkinson's QLD.
