About this studio
New Era Dance Company has been teaching dance in Hall Green, Birmingham since 2000. The school was founded by Brian Holtom, a qualified teacher in Latin, Ballroom and Disco Dance with the International Dance Teachers Association, who received life membership of the Association in 2004. Before establishing New Era, Brian was co-owner of the Galleon Dance Centre in Hall Green.
The school teaches Latin, Ballroom, Modern and Old Time Sequence at all levels from absolute beginners to accomplished dancers. Beginners in Ballroom learn Waltz and Quickstep, progressing to Slow Foxtrot and Tango as they improve. Latin beginners start with Rumba and Cha Cha Cha, progressing to Jive, Paso Doble and Samba, with more advanced figures added for experienced dancers. Private lessons are available for those wanting to progress faster or supplement group classes.
Classes are held on Wednesdays at The Fircones, with Beginners Latin and Ballroom at 7.30–8.00 pm followed by practice and social dance from 8 pm onwards. Private lessons are also available Friday afternoons from 12–2 pm. The school emphasises learning at a comfortable pace with lots of repetition and support. Medal tests are available for dancers seeking formal recognition of their progress, though these are entirely optional.
Brian teaches through a love of dance and takes satisfaction in helping people develop from worried beginners into confident social dancers. The school holds regular social dances where students can practise what they've learned in class. Classes are open to anyone aged 15–80+, and while a dance partner is desirable, you don't need to bring one — the school pairs people up and partners are always available at social dances.
