About this studio

Oxford Balboa is a group of Balboa enthusiasts who teach and dance this partnered Swing dance in Summertown. Balboa developed in the 1920s and 1930s on the West Coast of America, evolving as dance floors became more crowded and music got faster. The style danced today comes in two forms: close-hold "pure bal" and open-hold "bal-swing", both allowing room for musicality and improvisation.

Classes run on Monday evenings at St Michael's Church Hall on Portland Road. The session structure begins at 7.15pm with doors opening, then moves through a Focus on Fundamentals session (7.30–8.30pm) designed for beginners and experienced dancers alike. After a practice and tea break, there's a Developing Your Dancing session (9.00–10.00pm) for those with solid fundamentals, followed by social dancing and practice until 10.30pm. Complete beginners are encouraged to start no later than week 2 of any 6-week block.

No partner is needed: the group rotates partners in classes, though you can stay with a fixed pair if you prefer. You don't need prior dance experience. The cost is £10 per class (£7 for students and unwaged), or £50 for a block of 6 classes (£40 for students/unwaged). Single classes can be booked via DanceCloud or paid in cash or card at the door.

Oxford Balboa was established in 2022 by local dancers. Beyond classes, they run a monthly social dance called Balboa Beckons on Sunday, and host workshops including events like the Balboa Beckons with the Easy Rollers. The group describes itself as welcoming and friendly, inviting dancers of all levels to join.
