About this studio
Providence Tango has been part of Providence's Argentine Tango community since around the year 2000, when founder Ellen converted a factory building into a dance studio. The business has evolved through several hands over the decades. In 2016, Adam Cornett and Tilly Kimm took over the studio; the following year they ran Providence Tango combined with Brown University's tango club. Since 2018, Providence Tango has been run by the local tango community itself—Sue Davis, Denise Braum, and Steven Spura—who continue to host classes and regular events.
Providence Tango operates from the Mediator Stage in Providence, offering a mix of teaching and social dancing. Both Beginner and Advanced Beginner classes are scheduled throughout the year, available as series classes or as single lessons before the monthly Practica session. Beyond classes, the studio hosts regular practicas (practice sessions) and milongas (social dances), plus occasional special events. The schedule is flexible and expanding: in general, you can expect one milonga and one practica each month, along with at least one community event, though the pattern varies. Providence Tango also hosts indoor, outdoor and community events to reach dancers across different venues.
To stay informed about the shifting schedule, Providence Tango maintains an active mailing list, sending 1 to 2 emails per week about regular classes and events, with additional emails during special events. The business changed hands in 2013 to Steven Spura, who ran it from the Pawtucket Armory before Adam Cornett and Tilly Kimm took over in 2016 and moved the studio to the Mediator Stage in Providence in 2017. Since 2018, Providence Tango has been run by the local tango community.
