Purple Charlotte Steppers Club, led by Master Instructor Demond Carter, is rooted in African-American partner dancing and urban ballroom dance culture. Demond Carter has spent over 16 years shaping the Urban Ballroom Dance Culture (UBDC) nationwide and continues to inspire dancers and communities through the power of movement, with the support of his wife Ini.
The club offers multiple ways to learn: group classes, private one-on-one sessions, and virtual instruction with high-quality streaming. Group classes meet every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at American Legion Post 353 on Hovis Road. Classes are designed for all skill levels, from beginners building confidence to advanced dancers refining technique.
PAPE (Purple Artistic Performance Ensemble) is the club's elite performance group, celebrating the artform of African-American partner dancing through choreographed performances and educational workshops. The ensemble performs for government entities, organizations, and has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning artists. Their most recent work includes choreography and performance in the Avett Brothers' music video for their hit single "High Stepping." PAPE brings African-American partner dancing to audiences worldwide and teaches the art and history of partner dancing to enthusiasts of all skill levels.
The club runs Titans Weekend, an annual multi-day gathering (August 21–24, 2025, at Le Meridien Charlotte) celebrating steppers culture with performances, workshops, and community connection. Dancers can also access the club's annual dance competitions, which bring together talented performers from across the region to compete for prestigious awards.
In addition to regular classes and performances, Purple Charlotte Steppers provides wedding choreography and hosts special events for corporate functions and private celebrations. Certified instructors include Mike Way, Malik Sibley, and Superior Allah, alongside apprentice instructors developing their craft. The club maintains a 4.9 Google rating across 40 reviews.
