About this studio

Rhythm & Motion Dance Studio has been teaching Argentine Tango in Toronto's west end since 1995. The studio offers group classes, workshops, semi-private and private lessons for teenagers and adults at beginner to advanced levels. All classes are taught by professional, world-class instructors and focus on proper technique and elegant quality of movement.

The studio's programme is structured and progressive across eight levels, designed so students learn fundamentals, floor craft and navigation from the start. Classes are held Wednesdays: Argentine Tango Beginner/Intermediate from 7:00pm–8:30pm (4 weeks), and Argentine Tango Intermediate/Advanced from 8:30pm–10:00pm (4 weeks). Both couples and singles are welcome; the studio pairs unpaired students with volunteers from higher levels to ensure no one dances alone.

Beyond classes, Rhythm & Motion hosts Milonga Portena, a social tango gathering held on the last Saturday of each month where students and the wider tango community dress up, dance and socialise. The studio has organised major tango events for the last 20 years, including the Toronto Tango Festival—a four-day celebration in June drawing dancers from across North America and the world, featuring artists and performers from Buenos Aires—and the Toronto Tango Marathon in January, a three-day non-stop tango weekend with DJs, music and refreshments.

Director Elizabeth Sadowska is fully certified with the Canadian Dance Teachers Association and brings over 30 years of dance experience, trained in ballet, modern and jazz alongside extensive ballroom and Latin competition background. She has studied authentic Argentine Tango with many maestros in Buenos Aires and represents the only structured eight-level Argentine Tango programme in the city. In 2015, Elizabeth and her team represented Argentina at the opening ceremonies of the PANAM games in Toronto. The teaching team includes Linda Smith (Argentine Tango, specialising in technique and musicality), Alexander De Ronov (Ballroom & Latin, Salsa, Bachata, Argentine Tango), DJ Hu/Wendy (Argentine Tango, House DJ), Lukasz (Argentine Tango), and Sona Khachikyan (Argentine Tango, 2023 and 2024 Canadian Open Argentine Tango Champion).

What to expect

Your first visit

Your first class will focus on fundamentals and floor craft in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. You will be paired with a partner (the studio arranges this if you come alone), change partners throughout the session, and rotate with others so no one is left without a dance partner. Classes are progressive and best joined at the start of a session.
