About this studio
Salsa in the Suburbs was created in 2007 to bring the energy of the Philadelphia salsa community to its surrounding suburbs. Founded by Julie Berger (also known as Julie Cummings), the studio is committed to using dance as a vehicle to enhance and change lives.
The studio offers group classes in salsa, bachata, merengue, cha cha, swing, hip hop, adult tap, and zumba. It also runs a salsa and bachata teacher certification program. Private lessons are available for most dance genres, including styling and personalised wedding dances and first dance preparation. All classes are offered in person or on Zoom; if you miss a class you can zoom in or ask for a recording to be emailed at no extra cost. Online video tutorials are available for salsa, bachata and tap so you can learn at your own pace from home.
The salsa programme is extensive and carefully crafted over a decade. Beginner I salsa starts with basics and fundamentals, including leading and following, Right-hand Turn Pattern, Cross Body Lead, and Inside Turn. Week 8 includes a nightclub simulation. Beginner II builds on these skills with more fancy footwork, spins, and moves like enchufla and Make Her Walk. Intro to Intermediate bridges the gap to Intermediate Salsa, which follows a six-month syllabus with themes such as Inside Turns or Copas. Intro to Advanced introduces 15 new warm-up moves and two elaborate patterns over 8 weeks. Advanced Salsa focuses on intricate footwork, styling, 360s and multiple spins. Specialised classes include Salsa Improvisation 2.0, Ladies' Salsa Styling, and Spins, Shines & Musicality. Beginner Bachata teaches the basics of this romantic style; Intermediate Bachata comprises 18 patterns over a six-month curriculum offered twice weekly; Sensual Bachata focuses on body waves, circular arm movements and isolations. Beginner Cha Cha & Merengue covers timing, footwork and simple partner patterns over 8 weeks. Line dancing is offered in R&B and country styles, both 8-week sessions. Zumba classes run every Saturday 10:45am–11:45am.
All full-time teachers have master's degrees; two hold master's degrees in education. The studio prides itself on balancing the ratio of leaders to followers in each class by calling in advanced student helpers or shifting students across days if needed. You never need to bring a dance partner. The curriculum is carefully sequenced so each lesson builds on prior skills.
The studio hosts local dance parties for all levels, monthly Latin dance parties, and offers DJs and instructors for private parties, corporate team building activities, birthday parties, bachelorette parties, weddings, school enrichment programmes (K–12 and colleges), quinceaneras, and Latin clubs. The studio is available for rental. Students have praised the encouraging instruction, the ability to record demonstrations on their phones, and the welcoming, supportive environment.
What to expect
Your first visit
Classes mix warm-ups, step-by-step instruction breaking down moves, partner work with rotation so you dance with everyone, and skill review. Beginner I salsa ends with a nightclub simulation in week 8. The studio emphasises no-partner setup and balanced leader-to-follower ratios. All classes are available in person or via Zoom.

All full-time teachers have master's degrees; two hold master's degrees in education. Julie Berger Cummings is founder and artistic director and teaches beginner and advanced salsa, improvisation, ladies' styling, and intermediate and sensual bachata. Marie Evans teaches Beginner II and Intro to Intermediate salsa, and intermediate bachata. Victor Cummings teaches Intro to Advanced salsa and Spins, Shines & Musicality.
