About this studio

Sonia Plumb Dance Company is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Hartford, Connecticut, founded in 1991. For over 30 years, the company has combined dance artistry with compelling storytelling across performances, classes, workshops, and community outreach.

The company's mission is to enrich, educate and inspire communities through innovative contemporary-modern dance. SPDC reaches beyond the arts community with a diverse repertoire that often reflects upon larger societal issues. Their work spans from stages to classrooms to parks to libraries throughout the Northeast and beyond.

Their performance repertoire includes full-length and shorter works such as Penelope's Odyssey, The Pearl, The Cure(d) (featuring pole dancing, aerial, modern dance and juggling), The Sound of Migration, Romancing the Stones, and Athena the Safe Son. The Cure(d) is set to music and lyrics of The Cure and has been described as at times poignant, provocative, light-hearted, dark and deeply vulnerable.

Education offerings include Classes and Workshops, Dance in the Classroom programs, and Contextual Dance. Community programming includes Dance in the Parks, open rehearsals, webinars, library talks, Family Dance events, and neuro-diverse friendly matinees. The company also runs Active Bodies/Active Minds dance classes for children on the Autism Spectrum, launched in 2013.

SPDC values equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in programming on stage, in the classroom and in the community. The company provides free and low-cost access to performances when needed and seeks to develop a diverse workforce of dancers, teachers and staff. In 2015, the company received Hartford Foundation for Public Giving's three-year cornerstone grant to provide apprenticeships to underserved, typically minority, high school graduates who cannot afford typical four-year degrees in dance.

The company operates from its Hartford address at 233 Pearl Street, Suite 14, and maintains a seasonal base in Washington, Vermont (305 Plumb Road). Contact hours are Monday–Friday 9 am–6 pm and Saturday–Sunday 10 am–2 pm.
