About this studio

Steel City Swing has been spreading the joy of swing dance since 2007. Based in Birmingham, AL, the club teaches Lindy Hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz, Balboa, and Collegiate Shag to dancers of all levels. As of February 2026, classes and social dancing happen Wednesday nights at Magnolia Ballroom, where you'll find beginner and intermediate lessons starting at 6:30 pm, followed by a social dancing hour at 7:30 pm.

Beginner lessons are designed for brand new dancers and cover the basics of partner dancing: connection, footwork, and introductory 6-count and 8-count Lindy Hop moves. Most people take the beginner class a few times to get comfortable with basic rhythms before moving to intermediate. Intermediate classes build on those fundamentals and focus on expanding your move repertoire and variations, with each month typically exploring a different topic.

The club is run entirely by volunteers—staff, instructors, and DJs all donate their time except for special requested events. Ben Dill is the head instructor and has taught dance for more than ten years, spending eight years teaching in Birmingham and twelve years before that learning and teaching throughout Auburn and the southeast. His energetic style and engagement with the fundamentals make lessons memorable for dancers at any level. Katie Morgida has been dancing Lindy Hop since 2011 and brings a creative, inspiring approach grounded in mastering essential movements.

Steel City Swing also hosts weekend swing dance workshops for more in-depth learning, live band nights, and offers group lessons and performances for events. You don't need a partner—the club rotates partners frequently so you can meet and dance with many different people. No prior dance experience is necessary.

Dress code is relaxed: wear something comfortable that you can move in. If wearing a skirt or dress, bring dance shorts underneath. Avoid high heels and flip-flops for safety. Park behind the building; enter via the Encore parking lot at the bottom of the hill and drive along its edge to reach the Magnolia Ballroom lot.
