Swing Dance Club of Hawaii is a non-profit organisation dedicated to West Coast Swing dancing on the island of Oahu. The club hosts dances at the Palladium, located on the 2nd floor of the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse at 404 Kapahulu Ave, Honolulu.
The Palladium is home to the largest dance floor in the islands — 11,000 square feet of wood ballroom space. Free parking is available in the lot accessed via the short road alongside the Waikiki Public Library.
West Coast Swing combines the structure and personal connection of lead/follow partnership dancing with freestyle expression. Unlike most ballroom forms that keep dancers in close, controlled two-handed connection, West Coast Swing uses primarily a one-handed connection, leaving the other side of your body open for styling. Dancers spend much of their time at arm's length from each other, allowing more freedom to play with footwork and body styling. The style is danceable to nearly any music.
The club emphasises learning three core basics: the push break (sugar push), the left side pass, and the right side pass. The site provides instructional videos to help you build confidence in these foundations. The philosophy is that mastery of patterns matters less than developing feel for the music and your partner — once the basics become second nature, you can begin adjusting your footwork and body movement to the music itself.
