About this studio
Swing Patrol Berlin teaches the swing dances of the African American community from the 1910s–1940s, with Lindy Hop at the centre. Lindy Hop originated in the mid-1920s at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York, and remains the flagship of swing dance. The studio also teaches Collegiate Shag, St. Louis Shag, Balboa, Charleston, and Solo Jazz (also called Vernacular or Authentic Jazz). Music ranges from Blues and Hot Jazz through Ragtime and Swing to Early Rhythm and Blues.
Classes run at five locations across Berlin on a drop-in basis with no registration required. On Mondays, classes meet in Prenzlauer Berg at SP Kolle and in Wedding at SP Panke. Tuesdays bring sessions to Friedrichshain at SP Frankfurter Allee and Kreuzberg at SP Prinzenstrasse. Wednesdays run in Neukölln at SP Rollberg / Schillerkiez, and Thursdays gather in Prenzlauer Berg at SP Kulturbrauerei. Each location typically offers two classes per evening: a Starter class (Take The A Train) at 18.15 and an intermediate or advanced class (Drop Me Off In Harlem or Open Class) at 19.30. Instruction is delivered in both German and English.
The teaching philosophy centres on social dancing—the goal is for all participants to learn how to dance together in a relaxed way on the dance floor. Occasionally the studio creates performances and shows with interested dancers. Weekend workshops follow a "Learn to Dance in a Day" format for Lindy Hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz with Shim Sham, and Shag dances, designed for those with little or no experience. Partner registration is not required for any workshops.
Swing Patrol intentionally teaches in public spaces—bars, clubs, and cultural institutions—because the dances emerged in such environments and because supporting diverse venues matters. The studio offers private instruction for individuals, couples, and groups on request, and appears at public and private events. Founded in 1998 in Australia and established in Berlin in 2011, Swing Patrol positions itself as a global community of dancers. The environment is explicitly framed as a safe space open to all who respect others; the studio does not tolerate racist, homophobic, sexist, or intolerant views.
