About this studio
Swing Patrol North Sydney teaches swing dancing—a group of partner dances created by African Americans in the early 20th century and danced to swing music and other swing-able music. The studio specialises in Lindy Hop, which is the core dance they teach, alongside Balboa, Charleston, Shag, Blues, and Solo Jazz. Classes run on a drop-in basis with no booking or membership required, and you don't need to bring a partner—dancers rotate frequently throughout lessons, giving everyone the chance to lead and follow with different people.
Weekly classes happen on Tuesdays at three levels. Level 1 (Beginner) starts from absolute zero with no prior knowledge needed, teaching basics in 4-week blocks focusing on 6 and 8-count Lindy Hop and 1920s and 1930s Charleston. Level 2 (Intermediate) is for dancers with solid swing-out technique and comfort with 8-beat, 6-beat and Charleston footwork, introducing musicality and refined lead/follow technique. Level 3 (Advanced) is for dancers with 2–3 years' experience who regularly social dance and want to hone their technique and learn challenging new steps. Teachers Jo and Andy lead the North Sydney classes. As of May 12th, 2026, North Sydney classes will be located at Crows Nest Dance Studio.
Swing Patrol also runs Swing Central, a monthly social dance event in Newtown at St. Stephen's Hall (189 Church St, Newtown NSW), held roughly every month with confirmed dates announced on their Facebook page. Each Swing Central event includes a 7:00–7:30pm all-levels introductory class followed by 7:30–10:30pm of social dancing with live DJs playing swing jazz. Cost is $20 for the class (includes social entry) or $15 for social dancing only, with payment at the door by card or cash.
The studio is deeply committed to being a safe, inclusive and welcoming community. They acknowledge that swing dancing, Lindy Hop, and jazz music all come from African American and Black culture, and they operate on the unceded traditional lands of the Cammeraygal people of the Guringai Tribe of the Eora Nation, paying respects to their Elders. Classes and socials are LGBTQI+ friendly. All attendees are asked to observe the Swing Patrol Code of Conduct and Safe Spaces Policy, and the studio has zero tolerance for aerials on the social dance floor. Private lessons are also available—enquire with your regular teachers or email the studio.

Your first visit
Drop in for a casual, welcoming class where you'll learn swing basics from scratch or build on what you know. You'll rotate partners throughout the lesson, work at your own level (beginner, intermediate or advanced), and have fun learning in a friendly environment with no pressure and no need to book ahead.

Studio history
Swing dancing was created by African Americans in the early 20th century, with Lindy Hop—the mother of swing dances—born and mastered in African American communities in New York in the 1930s. Swing music had its heyday from 1935 to 1946 when Big Band swing was at its peak in the United States, but has been around since the late 1920s. Today, modern musicians continue the tradition with new interpretations of the genre.
