About this studio
Swing Patrol is a worldwide community of dancers teaching the swing dances of the African American community from the 1910s–1940s. The Berlin location opened in 2011 and now operates at multiple venues across the city, including the Prinzenstraße location in Kreuzberg near Kottbusser Tor.
At the Prinzenstraße venue, classes run on Tuesdays with no registration required. The Starter class "Take The A Train" begins at 18:15 and welcomes complete beginners—you don't need to have taken a single step before. The Improver class "Drop Me Off In Harlem" follows at 19:30 and requires at least basic Lindy Hop knowledge. Both are taught in German and English. Classes teach the fundamentals of Lindy Hop and prepare you for social dancing, with different content each week.
Swing Patrol's main focus is social dancing—the goal is for all participants to relax and have a good time together on the dance floor. They occasionally create small shows and performances with interested dancers. The organisation emphasises that classes rotate partners, so you don't need to bring your own, though couples who prefer not to rotate are also welcome. Teenagers aged 14–17 can attend Starter classes free of charge at this location.
Beyond regular classes, Swing Patrol offers weekend workshops including "Learn To Dance In A Day" formats for Lindy Hop, Charleston, Solo Jazz, and Shag, plus private lessons for individuals, couples, and groups. The studio also runs regular social dance nights (Red Rhythm Swing Dance Night on Thursdays at Frannz Club) and participates in festivals and events including Swing & Wine.
The community welcomes all ages—participants range from 18 to 80—and the studio is explicit about being a safe space: they tolerate no racist, homophobic, sexist, or intolerant views. The history and context of the music and dances taught is a core part of their instruction.
